About Ideal Weight
"Ideal weight" is a general estimate based on height and gender. It doesn't account for important factors like muscle mass, bone density, body composition, or individual health conditions.
These formulas were developed for specific medical purposes and may not represent the healthiest weight for everyone.
Formulas Explained
Devine Formula (1974)
Originally created for calculating drug dosages. Most commonly referenced in clinical settings.
Robinson Formula (1983)
A modification of the Devine formula that tends to give slightly lower estimates.
Miller Formula (1983)
Another modification that generally produces values between Devine and Robinson.
Hamwi Formula (1964)
One of the earliest formulas, originally developed for diabetic exchange diets.
Important Considerations
- Athletes: May have higher ideal weights due to muscle mass
- Body frame: People with larger frames may be healthy at higher weights
- Age: Weight recommendations may vary with age
- Health markers: Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar are better health indicators than weight alone
Focus on overall health rather than a specific number on the scale.
