What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic life-sustaining functions, such as breathing, circulation, cell production, and nutrient processing.

Your BMR accounts for about 60-75% of your total daily energy expenditure, making it the largest component of your metabolism.

Formulas Used

Mifflin-St Jeor (Recommended)

The most accurate formula for most people:

  • Men: (10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age) + 5
  • Women: (10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age) - 161

Harris-Benedict

An older but still widely used formula:

  • Men: 88.362 + (13.397 x weight in kg) + (4.799 x height in cm) - (5.677 x age)
  • Women: 447.593 + (9.247 x weight in kg) + (3.098 x height in cm) - (4.330 x age)

Factors Affecting BMR

  • Age: BMR decreases about 2% per decade after age 20
  • Muscle mass: More muscle means higher BMR
  • Body size: Larger bodies require more energy
  • Gender: Men typically have higher BMR due to more muscle mass
  • Genetics: Some people naturally have faster metabolisms
  • Hormones: Thyroid hormones significantly impact BMR
